  • i was a section leader 05 & 06....won best section those years :D
  • No You dont have to play snare. But i gues it just fits well with a snare player cuz they are acutall the ones who kick everything off.
  • Typically, I'd like him or her to play snare, but as in other sections, the best leader in the section might not be the one with the fastest, loudest chops. If the lead cymbal player is the person that can get the rest of the section together, then hell, maybe he or she should be section leader.
  • Not necessarily.........but i would prefer a snare drummer over anything else cuz they know their rudiments and know how to sight read!!!!
  • no not really i play all percussion and i was a snare sec.leader but naw u don't
  • there ever been a bass drum as sec. leader? lol
  • naw over at lincoln ours is da bass drum captian
  • usually. cuz snares start the cadences...
  • Interesting debate. Must the section leader of a particular percussion instrument start every cadence? Whether you say yes or no...it shouldn't effect who could be the section leader of a percussion section.

I don't think that a one has to be on the snare drum in order to be a section leader.

It's kinda like the alto/tenor saxophone debates. Again...it shouldn't matter what instrument you play. If you are qualified (loaded word right there), and you play in the section, then yeah...you can/could/should be a section leader.
  • here's a thought:

there are generally 5 section leaders in a percussion section: Snare, tenor, cymbal, bass, and quint (if applicable).

of these 5 leaders one of them is the leader over the entire percussion section.

so while the snare captain/leader STARTS the cadences, he may not be the leader of the entire section.

    how's THAT? =)
