  • Not a priority?? Wat skool do u go to again? I bet C. Darwin wud state otherwise. Hate to b the Debbie Downer but competition is a way of life here n America. Demoralizing but absolutely true! Truth is, if u cant compete...theres always welfare or certain death...or in the case of band a community college?!??

Good day to u too sir!
    • @ underage thinker...Don't want to start a fight with you, but competition is not, and should not be a priority.  It is a tool (like the poster said) to sharpen/polish musicianship, work ethic, character, discipline and the like.

Part of the reason why show-style band culture is on the decline (and it is) is that competition is wrongly made a priority over musicianship and virtuosity.  A case in point - why are we reduced to using totally unmusical references to describe performances....crankin', blastin' etc... have taken over . The atmosphere and the mindset truly need to changed.

        AYYYYYYE!! lol

      • To each his own i guess?!? But if u cme my way wit dat mess....ull probably end up embarrashing yo whole program! Competition shouldnt b the only motivator....but its a damn gud start! For u bizness majaz....competition is one of the first things u recognize when tryn to enter a market... N if u cant compete...U DONT SURVIVE!!!
        • You have to know how to compete first to survive, gotta practice right to come out on top, not just practice a few times then go out just to see what you can do and how loud you can play. Coach is right, bands go out to competitions unprepared and get shamed. its understandable to take a new band out to experience it but after a while, go back to the drawing boards.
        • identifying your market takes place over competition. Competition fosters innovation.
In terms of education, musically speaking, concern should be fundamentals first. Ie...the large numbers of functionally musically illiterate children with horrible tone quality...jessayin...

          • Competition used to foster innovation. Innovation is lacking in the HBCU bandworld these days.
        • @ underage thinker...I have the utmost confidence  in my bands' ability.   My kids can hold their own very well when it comes to playing music!  Excellence does not fear competition...a good warrior - musical or military does not engage in a fight unless they have prepared themselves to win!

      • I agree. I used it to get both my beginning band classes to step up their game. I would record each group and let them listen to each other and see if they could perform an exercise or a song better. I noticed once I introduced that element of competition between those classes, their focus and listening skills improved.
