HBCU Marching Band Hazing Forum

Seriously, what the heck is going on with our band programs and these hazing allegations. If they try to keep it up, we're not going to have anymore band programs. I'm highly upset and disappointed right now because I should be going through my crab year, but I attend Claflin University. Anyway, I feel like if I try to transfer and participate in a band program, it's going to be suspended due to hazing allegations, and I should not have that fear right now. For those of you who love HBCU marching bands like I do, how do you feel about this? The whole band hazing has spiraled out of control. Any thoughts???? Concerns???

  • Yeah, I definitely agree man. I haven't started marching yet and one of the reasons I didn't go to the school I wanted to go to is because of the hazing allegations. It's ridiculous. There are bands that are not even big enough or have a reputation that's great enough to consider hazing or any other kind of rituals that are like hazing. I have even considered changing my major from mus. edu. because I'm afraid that by the time, I finished my prereqs at my college, there won't be any HBCU band programs. The government is already stripping funds from our schools as it is, the last thing we need to do is give them a reason to do it. We have to grow up and realize that it's bigger than what we are doing. But, this is our generation man. We don't learn until we have no other choice but to learn.

  • I'll bite.....now I warn ahead of time that I may not keep it civil.....my freshman year....things happened with me that I ain't proud of.....I have never enjoyed nor supported hazing....many fools of the time looked at it like a rights of passage...it was more important than the productivity of the band...not as bad in my own as some of my peers dealt with at their schools, but hey.  I dealt with it in high school....didn't like it then...FAMU, in all honesty....ignored the red flags.....now they have become a huuuuuuge white flag....fact is......it's too much of a nigga mentality for stupid ass black students stuck in they damn ways, so quick to talk shit and joke about FAMU but now they ain't the only ones.....boast love for the band but still doing the one thing that continually kills programs now.....now it's just and utter disdain for them....they don't care about these programs or the success thereof......I hate how in some programs....people were not allowed to comeback but a huge amount of those that pledged sections and ish like that came back and continue to run these programs down....if u fall into that category...stop that shit....

  • And what grinds my gears is you have alumni who publicly used to and at times still do push for the hazing b.s. now starting anti hazing groups in public.....but some are the first to talk "hazing vs pledging" behind closed doors and why hazing is right......there is no difference....

  • Exactly. None of the schools I considered have been suspended yet, but bands are getting caught left and right, so idk. And I agree that it is a mentality that is hard to break out of, for some reason. You want to become a Parton that and so bad that you dont realize that your life is in danger. That is just what happened to Robert Champion, and he was a drum major. People who never marched don't understand the band lifestyle, so they wonder why others tolerate getting beat down.
  • the whole thing really just needs to stop before we have no bands. case and point===> its over with for hazing

  • I 100% agree!!!!
  • there's a right and a wrong way to do everything. This is what happens when its done the wrong way.

  • with this discussion in light i have to mention tha Shaw University has just been suspend..We're losing it folks.

  • See. This is what I'm talking about.
  • I agree with 2 Tall.  Shaw too? WTF

SO let me get this list right:
