The Human Jukebox Alumni Association (official Alumni Association for the Southern University Marching Band)
is encouraging all organizational alumni ( band, pan-hellenic and non-panhellenic fraternities and sororities) to join in with us in our Anti-hazing movement. The HJAA believes that all of these organizations are vital to the universities and communities in whichthey serve. While we are NOT PLEASED with many of the actions that have happened over the years, we do see the extreme value in what these organizations provide. Many of these organizations have a great influence on students intent to pursue higher education, as well as, help them offset some of the expenses of higher education, all of which results in overall improvement of the community. The HJAA main objectives are enhancing the Southern University Band Program and the community. Community enhancement is very critical to us, but this task can not be accomplished by us alone. We need the help of HBCU Band Alumni, Traditional College & University Band Alumni, Music Fraternity and Sorority Alumni, Pan-Hellenic and Non Pan-Hellenic Fraternity & Sorority Alumni, and anyone else who understands that the overall purpose of these organizations outweigh the desired actions of a few. Please join with us in this movement to remove all aspects of hazing from our colleges, universities, and communities. We are asking everyone to post their name, college, organization, and years they attended college to show our schools, communities, and the media that we are here to have a POSITIVE impact and save our students, organizations, colleges, and universities and communities

Oh spare me! The only reason schools are jumping on this "anti-hazing movement" bandwagon is because of FAMU. All of this is going to backfire on band programs big time. You already have  the administration at Texas Southern sticking it to the band program when the football team is getting away with all types of madness. Hell, the administration is sitting around plundering the accounts for their personal use. But something goes on in the band room, it's time to expel students and cut staff.

Bands are going to do this anti-hazing thing and the administration will hold them to whatever is in the so-called movement. The minute something takes place it will be labeled "hazing."

A small argument between members? HAZING!

Lock a freshman in the stall? HAZING!

Hide a freshmans music to assist lol? HAZING!

Someone screws up a performance and the BD places them on the side for a week? HAZING!

I guess, Mr.... Pinnacle of HUMANITY??? ...hmf!!

Get your panties out ya butt and stop acting all guilty!!! Aint nobody pointed a finger to call for EXCUSES.  I believe, what my man is referring to is the FUTURE of band, fraterneities and sororities' existence in the HBCU as well as colleges as a whole. Obviously, alot of our band programs need a lawyer to deliver a seminar on topic "What is hazing??"  to ensure that bandsmen refrain from those activities that are labeled as hazing, for the sake of the groups. Yes, FAMU was an eye opener. FAMU Band is a organization who was presently influencing 100's of african american to recieve higher learning.  And if it is gone, what good is the organization to the 1,000,000's who wants to attend and graduate from FAMU through participation in the FAMU Band?? We can sit an cry about everyone pickin at us, point fingers at the next person "look massa, he aint workin either", and make excuses all day, but the problem will continue until we stand up, unite, educate ourselves, and then rid ourselves of the problem.

P.S. Haven't yall notice the government always mess with the individual who DON"T KNOW THE LAW OR THEIR RIGHTS...

That's the DAMN problem...this litigation filled society we live in!!!! This is the reason why American kids are so freakin soft!! Everything is always about a lawsuit, or someone afraid of being sued so you have all these so called "Anti-Hazing", "Anti-Bullying", "Anti-He Looked at Me Wrong...." movements....Just a bunch of Political BS that people are ascribing to in my opinion....what happened to people??? Why is there such a movement to be so damn political about everything??? These so called movements are full of people who only have their OWN agenda in mind!!! Whether it's Hazing or the new big thing Bullying, it just making people softer and softer. Hell, people were bullied on Brady Bunch, Andy Griffith, Leave It To Beaver, Saved By The Bell, and Family Matters, but on every one of those shows the victim was told the only way for it to stop is to stand up for themselves....I realize these are TV shows, but it was what I was taught my whole life....But obviously I was taught wrong because you can't do that in this litigious society!!!! Am I a hazing proponent......NO!!!! BUT....I do understand why it was implemented, LONG, LONG ago. The process has been misinterpreted from it's original purpose!!!! And hitting people was not the focal point of that process!!! You have to know it's NOT GOING AWAY!!!!! Educate people about the process, and why it IS ACCEPTED in just about EVERY screening process in the world.....I'm Just Sayin...

It's a new day, fellas.  There was once a time when a lot of stuff happened behind those band room doors that may have been necessary or unnecessary.  We, as bandmembers, have to get our hand OUT OF THE SAND on this issue, because we are a dying breed.  The only way to continue bringing entertainment to the masses is to understand how to SUSTAIN our programs.  I was in the Jukebox during the hazing era and in many ways contributed to hazing.  I was still immature, not thinking about "what's the worse that can happen" and thinking "well, I went thru it".  It's been hard to watch so many of the traditions we enjoyed on the yard go by the wayside, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.  For those that think this is just a game, a political ploy, tell me one thing:  If you were a band director at a university in this economic time, would you be willing to LOSE YOUR JOB and CREDIBILITY just so a section can "go thru right"?  Don't worry, I'll wait....

This is so true!!!! I would try and protect my job as well!!!! "By Any Means Necessary." So having students sign "No Hazing Policies" is the surest way to CYA!!! I get that!!! BUT......I have to agree with Mr. Hathaway in a sense that you still have to educate these young kids as to how, but more importantly, WHY all of this started. The problem is once you loose the history behind something, and all you have left is like you said, "well I went thru it" that leads to what is happening today. A bunch of people who "well I went thru it" trying to keep a so called "tradition" alive when they have no clue about WHY it exists!!! I completely agree it's a new day!!! I'm not saying to keep Hazing in place, and teach people HOW to do it!!!! Not in this day and age!!!! I'm simply saying the key to ANYTHING in life is UNDERSTANDING!!! In my opinion, it's something that has become a lost ideology!!! If you have understanding about whatever your situation is, the better the outcome!!! I too am from this hazing era, and took WAAAYYY more than my fair share, and yet I chose not to put anyone thru what I went thru when it was turn turn to reciprocate what was done to me!!!! BUT.....I UNDERSTOOD WHY I was going thru it!!!! I didn't like it AT ALL!!!!! But the humility I gained from that experience changed me forever, and I am SOOOOO THANKFUL, as crazy as that may sound, for that experience!!!! Many of us growing up, got our butts tore up by mama and daddy, and grandmother, and grandfather, and teacher, and etc.....and we turned out GREAT!!!!!! Believe it or not, we gained from those experiences!!!! Not that you have to get your A$$ whooped just to learn something because my experience was not a "Sectionaaals" session everyday. I'm just saying I learned from my mistakes. I'm agreeing with you and Mr. Hathaway!!! It's all about change, and being able to understand why something was established, is a part of that change as you move forward in this society, is what I'm saying!!!
