The musical advantage goes to the music students who are most prepared. This might be a trend of several inner-city music programs, but how important is it for inner-city music students to take private lessons?

Make your selection on the following scale:

1- not important

2- somewhat important

3- moderately important

4- of great importance

5- extremely important

  • I think this differs from person to person.

I personally never took lessons during high school, but I had so much drive and willpower...I practiced by myself two hours a day and ended up getting first chair trumpet at All County Band Auditions, over people who have been taking lessons for years.

  • It depends on where these students are... Some of the inner-city schools have great music & band teachers,so they are being taught sound fundamentals and these schools produce excellent musicians..Meanwhile,there are some schools that are just barely getting by with mediocre programs and the students these programs produce aren't able to get a scholarship when they graduate..

  • One of the issues is parents being more supportive of their children's participation in a music program. The financial side of investing money into the child taking private lessons. What if grants were available to set up private lesson programs, even for the successful band director? Simply to give the inner city programs even more of an edge.
