I'm buying a new trumpet for son. He is a high school junior who plans to play trumpet in an HBCU band. He will major in music education. Any suggestions on a trumpet he can use now and in college? Don't want to spend more than 2K. Thanks

You can get a brand new King Silver Flair(Intermediate trumpet...good for marching band, lead trumpet parts, but ok for concert....etc) on Amazon for around $1,500-$1,600......depending on whether you want a thumb or saddle 1st valve trigger. Otherwise, you're looking at about $2500 or so for a Bach Stradivarius(professional trumpet).
You dont even have to spend that. You can get a CONN marching trumpet for about $750 and they are amazing like Toyota. I wouldnt get a BACH Strad unless he goes professional after college. They tear up fast anyway.
Don't buy Bach trumpets...they are good horns, but are way overpriced in my opinion. You can get a horn that is just as nice or even nicer for less than the price of Bachs.
I don't think your son should be limited to a "marching band trumpet" because a regular trumpet will suffice. Marching trumpets tend to sound good only in marching environments and since your son is going to major in music education, he will need a horn that will sound good inside as well because he will be doing a lot of solo playing indoors.
The cool thing is, King doesn't make this model anymore which means it is a rare model. And it's rare for a reason. It has a reverse leadpipe construction which will let your son put a lot more air into it. It also comes with really heavy valve caps for a more centered and solid sound.
Unless your son becomes a professional gigging player, this will be the only horn he needs. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
I play on a Bach Strad Model 37... i used it from marching band, jazz band, concert band, and orchestra.. i also play professionally with it....i have had it for almost 10 years and it has NEVER given me ANY troubles... i would recommend a Bach Strad.... They are WELL worth the price.... Lot's of times you can find them used, and with a little work, they are VERY DEPENDABLE....
And please... buy a professional horn...if he wants to major in music.. its best to invest in a HIGH QUALITY horn now... rather than buy some crap now, then have to spend the money later anyway....
