...On The Subject of "Building Better Bands"

This year, before the season starts, let's get a unified consensus of how we are going to analyze/critique bands.  What's the standard we're looking to see and hear?

Why this discussion...smack talk is cool, but I would like to see true, unbiased assessments without the b.s that follows when ppl give opinions from their hind parts just to:

1. get a rise out of rival bandsmen.

2. add their 2 cents...when their 2 cents is of a completely different currency.

    (trying to be tactful here)

  • Overall Presentation....i.e. uniformity in every thing, set up of the group etc...

Sound- not just loudness but also power but note accuracy (cleanliness), variations of mood, tempo attacks and releases, note durations

    Arrangements/ song selection

    Stamina

Field Shows- execution, precision, entertainment value, innovation

thats how i try to critique bands all the way round

  • I would like to add originality.

If I see one more band enter the field to a PV or FAMU drum cadence, then do a Southern drill to a Jackson state knockoff arrangement, at the end of the show exit the field playing go Wildcats and make it fit their school.  Im going to scream

Not knocking anyone's style but there is a Southern already and the same for all colleges.  I think you can use elements from your college but trying to create a replica isnt really creative. I love PV for real but there is a Marching Storm already.  I can never create another.
