I see a lot of people have a lot to say about all these hazing allegations and bands being put on suspension and most of these comments have been negative and for the most part unhelpful.

It seems as though people don't see the word ALLEGATION. As in possiblity. I can accuse any one on this site of being a monkey. Would this be true? It's a shame, people are so judgemental that the standard is guilty until proven innocent.

It is in my opinion that if a person doesn't have any information or ties to a band and is only going off something alleged, they should have nothing to say on the matter. No one needs a lecture from the program about "Oh we need to do better" or "Oh, didn't you learn when X University did that" because there's just as much of a chance that nothing inappropriate happened. I can call or email any offical of a university in a different state THIS MOMENT and say I was hazed. The band would be suspended TONIGHT. For an ALLEGATION.

I won't go into detail, but we were suspended for a PERSONAL issue 2 kids had OUTSIDE band that spilled over into the program. Stupid? Yes. Hazing? HELL NO!

I feel that we should not be so judgemental of our fellow programs. With this witch hunt going on, we need to support each other, not tear down.

  • i feel ya man. but hey if it's in the news, its gotta be talked about.

  • That's how Universities tend to view bands nowadays (regarding hazing).  For YEARS, bands have hazed, and denied it when the issues came up.  We done cried "wolf" one too many times, and now our bands have now become liabilities for the Universities.  So, whenever a simple band hazing allegation is brought up, our administrations are going to assume that the bands are in fact guilty until proven innocent.

Can't say that I blame them....we brought this on ourselves.

But it is what it is.  I just pray that the Universities don't shut our bands down altogether.  If this keeps up, they just might!

  • Yeah, band is started to become more of a liability than asset. And we all know how that story ends. Get it together people or the world will move on without us.

  • Damn Sky High Dx Well Said.

  • Tear down wth? Its almost a year since a dude got killed and people are still doing dumb stuff, how can you have pity over people that should know better? That's why hazing has become what it is now, people being hush mouth. People in many HBCU's talk especially if they are apart of K K Psi, TBS, Phi Mu Alpha, or just homeboys, etc. I think this matter of hazing has passed the ignorant stage. Someone got killed and people are still doing it, bands got drug through the mud twice on HBO and people are still doing it, Ebony Magazine did a story on hazing in HBCU bands and people are still doing it. STUPID. No way around it.

  • My friend, no one is tearing down anything. What the majority of people that have been discussing the hazing recently are saying is: if FAMU lost their ENTIRE band for a year, why would you even entertain anything close to hazing? That is the question that is the concern. People have not learned at all. There is at least one band that I know of personally that is hazing right now. Luckily it is not my alma mater so we are ok. This other band is continuing on as if it is business as usual. That is the concern because our CRAFT is on the line and people don't want to change. Change is necessary, by refusing to change we may be signing our own collective death warrant.

  • I have friends now who talk down about The 100 and The Ocean Of Soul As Now Being Negatives.

  • And this where this whole thing is headed unless we change our attitudes about what it takes to be a good band! Just like people who whip their children....there used to be a time where public whippings were ok. We don't live in that time anymore. You whip your children in public and chances are, you will face criminal charges and possibly lose the rights to your own children.

Just so it's known, I am against whipping children. I think there is more effective ways of teaching and enforcing right and wrong.

  • Off topic!!!!

I am ALL FOR corporal punishment and discipline!!!!  But these days the line between discipline and abuse has blurred.  Likewise, the line between hazing and abuse has blurred.  But, these organizations (not just bands) have taken abuse, and put the hazing label on it.  That's what happens when you have people who go around telling these exaggerated war stories to these kids, and expect them to live up to those exaggerated expectations.

    But that's for another discussion.

  • Alright PV Thank you for your compliment.
