Recommendations Needed for Trumpets and Mellos

My kids are playing King Silver Flairs and I need 8 more, but King has raised their prices to $1200.  I don't like Yamahas because of the brightness of the sound and the price.  What other companies make quality trumpets?
My kids are playing DEG Dynasty B-flat  Mellos.  Are their better horns available?
The school district is buying me new horns and I want as much bang for the buck as I can get!

  • Well Kanstul makes nice trumpets you can look into those. Bach's are nice too. But idk about mellos.
  • King Mellos, in my opinion, are the bomb...But expensive. I'm talking about the King 1121. Best Mellophone I've ever played. If you're looking for something a little cheaper, I'd go with the Bach 1105. It's popular as a horn for schools but it's not "all that". Idk how it compares to your DEG Dynasty B-flats.
  • That is true the player makes the horn sound good not the other way around. My schools horns arent so good looking but we still manage to be the best band in our state.
  • Mellos, I prefer either the aformentioned Yamaha BECAUSE of its bright, full sound or a Jupiter (deep bell, nice dark sound and pretty cheap for a good horn), I have one of both.
  • anything by CONN is durable and will last, If your district is generous then spring for BACHs but I dont think they are better than CONN
  • dynasty is a decent brand for mellophones, the best brand is really king...in my opinion...yamahas are good for begging mello players but if u wanna get a real good sound go for king...
  • I also prefer King to Yamaha...Yamaha's have a thinner lighter alloy in general and will give you a brighter and thinner(imo) sound, which I dont like, though they are usually cheaper. Kings are pricier but the heavier metal does allow for a darker tone which I prefer, it all comes down to what you prefer and more importantly, what yourbudget will allow..
  • Darrien, once again you've missed the point. The horns that I'm trying to get are for kids who don't have a horn at all. Also, I want the horns to be of good quality because they will have to endure many, many years in the hands of high school kids.

i played on CRAP my entire high school career. what ever you can do on one horn you can do on another...
  • For trumpet, Blessing, Bach, or Jupiter might be some other brands you might look into. Jupiter seems to be trying to improve the quality of their merchandise.

For mellophone, King is the best, but may also be more pricey, Dynasty might be a good keep.

If you want slightly cheaper, but still have some quality, Jupiter might fit the bill depending on the instrument.
  • jupiter trumpets feel like crap, and are crap and they break fast,
    i like king 601's
i agree tht the player makes the horn but i would rather play on a horn that feels good.
    king mellophones feel nice too,
