Required Mouthpieces for certain colleges?

Ive read on some topic, about in some bands they REQUIRE you to have a certain mouthpiece...How do you feel about that? Whats your take on the situation? And if you are in a band that requires you to play on a certain mouthpiece, what band is it and what mouthpiece are you required to be on? Whats the purpose of having it?

I kind of feel that having a required mouthpiece for a section limits the players...Like ive read in other topics, certain mouthpieces work differently for different people! Lip sizes vary, and they might not be plaing to their full potential!

Like i read about UAPB having required mouthpieces, right?..the Bass section had to play on the Helleburg , if im not mistaken.. Me personally i have played on the helleburg, but it is just too small for me!

  • the only time i think that is acceptable is in concert band
  • Required mouthpieces might be a tradition in a section. It might limit playing abilities. Every mouthpiece aint for everybody but then again if its a tradition you cant do anything about it. The section i'm in has a preferred mouthpiece "( Schilke 69c4) because of cup depth. But we are allowed to use what ever mouthpiece we find comfortable. As for UAPB requiring a certain mouthpiece, If it aint broke why fix it? why change what they have been in their band director's eyes and section leader's eyes successful with?
  • I see it like this...if you wanna play for a specific college, you need to abide by what they ask for. There may be a reason as to why they want you to play on that mouthpiece if you've never noticed. As for UAPB, yes we do require certain mouthpieces for instruments. I can't remember the specific one for tuba, but trumpets are required to have a Bach 3C Megatone.
  • the reason is so that everyone can be tuned properly as a section. truth is, Size Matters.. whether it be a smaller mouthpiece or smaller horn. it can affect pitch and range of a note ... so to balance that out The same Brand/Model Horns put in use with the proper mouthpiece makes a perfect pitch... aside from Tuning the section.in general.
