Role of the Mellophone in your Marching Band?

What is the typical role of the Mellophones in your band? As we all know, every band uses them differently. For example, at SU, the Mellophones are often in the spotlight and at FAMU, most of the time they are laid back and blended with the rest of the band.

What is your opinion on how they should be used?

Who is your favorite college Mellophone section?

  • I think they should always be in the Spotlight because they make the band sound soooo much better.
  • in our band, they add color to an arrangement....sometimes play chords with the trombones, sometimes play chorus with trumpets....but mostly counter melodies...
  • I love the sound of mellophones. the only time I ever hear mellophones is in SU band. they bring the songs to life. most other bands don't spotlight them like talking about it.
  • several things...counter melodies...parts of a song that are faint but important...chord holders with tbones (empire state of mind...su arrangement...who do i turn to fanfare)...nice woooooo rooo looooo sound with screamin trumpets (txsu arrangements...jstate power)...good crank mix with btones...
  • On SU's Empire(Haymer), they actually had the Melody.

  • a mellophone to me is a all around instrument. it can be used for filling up parts of btones tbones trumpets even woodwinds. and for the wow factor,.like in black in blues (SU arrangement) it does it all. those weird background tunes that you hear in songs are perfect parts for mellophones.i like when arrangers use mellophones to fill up spots that would be blank or empty. i love the sound of the horn thats why i like when they have melodies in the slow songs. it adds power and a distinct sound.

i like the mellophone use in this arranegment
