Showstyle vs Corpstyle? Whats the big deal ???

I see a lot of threads from both styles, showbands accusing corpsstyle bands of being boring, while corps style bands accuse showbands of focusing on entertainment rather than sounding good or executing properly. So my question is Whats the big deal?

Now I feel you guys on some Corps Style Bands being boring but I have seen some Corps Bands do some fire shows, and I mean shows that have good music that will bring the audience to their feet.  I also feel you guys on some Show Bands being able to sound good, execute well and entertain at the same time.  On the flip side, I have seen and heard some bands from both styles sound like absolute trash....

So is it possible for a band to do both styles and be successful in all arenas? Here are a few clips

I wish I could post more but no youtube at school.  So lets ask an even deeper question so you guys can talk.

Which style is really the better style?

  • I personally dont feel either style is better. I think its all preference. I've seen corps style bands do some amazing, entertaining, shows. And I've seen some great show-style bands who have a good, balanced sound with precision marching. Some people feel that all corps style shows are boring because they haven't been exposed to good corps bands. And the same could be said on why people think all show bands do is blast and dance.
  • The only real difference I see, is that it's a Culture thing...  I have seen both styles do great and i have seen both sound like trash ....and Military would probley be the best style LOL...

  • Well i feel for entertainment, show style bands are better, but execution wise, corps style is better..Now i cant lie,my corps style band is real boring cause vwe dont really get to play balota crunk stuff, but when it comes to marching,we get creative & can do more for our field show looks good. We play dumb stuff in the stands like "Land of 1000 Dances", and thats the only time i think show style bands have us beat,in the stands.
  • the difference between corps n show vs Military...Military band has way more discipline!! A band we played in the fall, Cleveland High School, OMG nothing but Marches. My BD goes over there to meet their directors and band and he asked how everyone was doing 1 out of 80 members replied and that person was punished....

Show n Corps have something in common though, both styles play music that the crowd knows, Corps just use Themed Shows while Show bands use songs from various eras plus marches(for both styles) I have seen corp bands dance at UIL n all that and get 1s, the one big difference is looking together. In show, we have a habit of trying to out do one another in anything that people see and hear. Thats why Show Bands are looked down upon, the key to being a GREAT showband is making sure you look and sound UNIFORM!!!

So lets say for example if you had the opportunity to design a CORPS STYLE show, what kind of music would you play?  and on the other hand, if you had a showband, what would you play?  What elements would you use?

    • In that case, A great Corps Style show is The Planets. Great show. On the other hand, I would do a Earth, Wind, and Fire Show Band show. Popular music but EWF is classic. You can't go wrong there.
  • .well id go around the school maybe asking kids what kind of music they like & whats the hottest songs out.

  • Do a show that represents both styles and cultures. Because at UIL, there is no rule against Dancing, as long as it is uniform. But songs from The Temptations, Romantics, Elements Earth Wind n Fire. Groups like that would get attention from both sides because our the difficulty level and its popularity.

and to Brea...I had the chance to sit in with The UT Longhorn Band when they played Texas A&M. Your BD has his head shoved where the sun dont shine because I was in the middle of the band in the stands and heard them play alot of crunk songs, one i really noticed was Run This Town!! n hey, i love Land of 1000 Dances lol. But bak to my point. UT plays alot of good music, may not be known to the young crowd which is majority of people our age wants to here(the KRUNK n SWAG eras). But to the ears of other directors and band followers. Some of that old stuff is good too. A Showband does not need to play every hot song out every single year because it gets old fast. Look at All I Do Is Win, that song got old before the season even started!!

Idk what grade you are in but if u are a freshman or sophmore, wait a while and he will understand when he starts losing kids because he refuses to let ya'll experience both sides of the marching band world. Willowridge is a perfect example because Mr. Thorton(RIP) show his students both sides and would do great at both. If I'm correct, his last UIL last school year at Marching Contest got I think 1s across the board if not a 2 somewhere in there. Came to MLK without him n won there. So i agree with some folks on here. It is up to the Director to have a full all around program. Which Mr. Runnels, SFA is getting there! Can't wait to see ya'll tomorrow night!

  • Also another important thing..

Define Corps, Show and Military Style.

  • I use to be in a corp style band and there is really nothing different from each other. one band is marching and the other is roll stepping, one plays popular music and the other plays musicals or classical. There is really not a difference. To me neither one is boring
