Song Selection And Originality

Why does it seem like 90% of BANDS either are not creative enough to get new songs in their book or they wait till Famu and Southern or Jackson State plays a song then everyone jumps on the bandwagonj

  • Technically when NEW songs are out EVERY band plays them.. but it's common to hear SU, FAM or JSU play it because first because they have a cult following ... meaning.. any band heard playing the same song after will automatically be accused of trying to play what others played...

selective hearing and biasness brings on alot of those arguments

    • exactly
  • #truth!

Im with u on this bigred14k. There r millions of songs out here literally yet errbody chooses to recycle the same arse material. I was so dissapointed with seeing BCU this past weekend. Hadnt ben to one of their games since 04 n these jokaz played the EXACT same muzik n arrangements. But they wana call themselves the best. Smh

Tru there will always b those songs that r played all ova the country but every area has there own sound yet we all play the same shid?!?! Come on band world!!!
  • I'm centrally rolling with Book on this one, but Underage Thinker hit one point on the head. Imma start by saying three things as far as the basic topic.....

1.) As far as the word "BOOK" goes.....how do u think that is developed? Band is a class, directors are educators....education sometimes has to work "end of the year and back" rather than "new beginnings"....that is to say, a SMART director will recycle songs that worked for the band the previous year......Realize if you will....EACH AND EVERY BAND YOU PUT IN THIS TOPIC AS THE "GO TO GUYS" ALLLLLL RECYCLE SONGS.......

2.) You say that people following these guys as far as music....I won't deny that in some cases, but in others.....it's just a coincidence....how? Because some people can write a song over the summer, and Band A plays it first, and in EVERY ONE TRACK MINDED PERSON'S POV, it is "their" song....I tell people all the time, especially as an arranger....better yet...I will use "Power" from last year....I recall a crab last year saying "JSU and SU play that"......I looked at them and said simply this...."NATHAN HAYMER and TRAVIS PREWITT are not KANYE WEST"....in other words IF YOU WRITE AN ARRANGEMENT...IT IS YOUR OWN....NOW......since u say that people bite from these select bands....u may wanna go back and evaluate the origins of "Power" last year....and see how after one played it....two of those followed up, one of which being practically the same.

3.) These bands are on a high horse that BIAS and ....well....SACK RIDING individuals put them on. That is the reason why many would say that anything band B does compared to them is "stealing" or "jumping on a bandwagon", when in fact....it's music....no one band has the right to any of this.....SN: u talk about no creativity.......some of the forementioned bands are notorious for keeping the same old...no matter how old it seems....WHY...because it works for them. SU plays SWANG after it has clearly washed up....why?...because it works for them and their fans.....

Book hit it on the head...and I'm with that 100%.......Underage Thinker said it best on arrangements.....ARRANGERS NEED TO BE MORE ORIGINAL....TRUE!!!! Some will not attempt to be different....thus they  make the band seem like a copycat. ........and lastly.....THE FOREMENTIONED BANDS ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE FACE OF ORIGINALITY!!!

    • What you just stated should be printed!!! This is very true.. people are too simple minded and ignorant to understand!
    • as far as #1 is concerned its different when the large majority of your book is songs of yester-year
      • CB the philosophy so goes.....if it ain't broke....don't fix it. Some stuff is timeless....LIKEWISE....if it died on the radio after one year.....it should die in the book....
  • When doin arrangments of popular song you always risk it sounding similar to another bands but no two arrangments should sound almost identical. Putting yourself and your thoughts into music should make every peice something new to the arranger as well. If that's happening then there should be no shortage of creativity.
    • i feel you on that ...
    • #real......... I mean....maybe it's just me, but if I could practically go to finale showcase and upload something and put my name on it or listen to a band and write what I hear and put my name on it.......I WOULDN'T FEEL LIKE I ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING!!!! In my mind, I have to do something outside of the box, that no one will have done with an arrangement. Do some of us hear a band play something and say "hey we should play that"....yes...but u should always write ABOVE anything that they played.....why get a song and water it down arrangement wise....defeat....At the same time, if you build your book off of songs that were thrown at u the previous week......yea....maybe you doing something wrong.
