Weird or "unusual" Instrumentation

I am scheduled to be a clinician for a band with no trombones(by choice) and the baritones acting as the trombone section. Now dci groups are like this, but what do ya'll think an HBCU band would be like with that instrumentation??

  • ...it could work...

split the mellos and b-tones to cover what the t-bones would play.

    3rd mello = 1st t-bone

    4th mello= 2nd t-bone

    3rd b-tone= 3rd t-bone

  • In my opinion, there is no "out right" substitution for trombones (slides are there for a purpose). Those slides are meaningful and it takes the sound of a band to another level... If HBCUs got rid of trombones, we all would notice a great difference in the sound and flavor produced by each HBCU band. I am woodwind bred, so it's just how I personally feel...
  • It can work.
  • Personally i cant stand it, but its at the discretion of the BD and what sound he wants. You'll never be able to get rid of trombones because of their unique ability to mimic the human voice.
  • like everyone said, it could work....

but why would you want to get rid of the best and sexiest instrument in the band????? LOL

    • He didn't say nothing about getting rid of saxophones man lol

      • lol
      • Darn you beat me to it.
  • It defnitely can work. I have seen bands with horrible instrumentation.
  • DCI Bands use valve trombones!! Personally I wouldn't get rid of trombones but everyone has a diffrent perspectives as to how they think a band should sound.. That's one of the great things about music, you can take it as far as you want it to go!
