What do you look for in your top picks for band?

This is NOT a who's your favorite band topic. I'm curious to see what other's are looking for when they decide they like a band.

Some people have many factors, some only have one. Some people count dancers and auxiliary as the overall rating, some don't. Some want balls to the wall power, others want straight lines and awesome dance routines. Some even don't have a reason other than nostalgia or family ties. None of these reasons are wrong. You can't have too many or too few because it's your opinion. Band is a subjective field.

For me, I look for 2 things. 1st is sound. Is the band pleasant to listen to? This is the most important category to me. The band should be in tune, playing the right notes with a full, characteristic sound, and playing together as a band at the appropriate level(i.e. college, high school, etc....). The second thing I look for is entertainment. Do I want to continue to watch/ listen to this? It's a bit of an umbrella that is a mix of musical display, interesting arrangements and ideas, energy, and variety. Drills need to be attention getting with little filler or dead time, though to be honest halftime shows have little bearing on my overall favoritism. I do not take account for dancers, auxiliary, dance routines, pure loudness, or individual sections.

  • I look for creativity and originality.  It does me little good to see and hear an awesome band that lacks any kind of creativity or willingness to go outside the box and innovate.  I'd rather look at a band crash and burn while trying to do something that pushes the envelope, than be bored by the same old ho hum band that does the same thing over and over and over.

  • 1. I look for sound quality, does it come together. Is it flowing or just some add-ins. 2. I look for arrangements, the arrangements have to sound like the original sound or close to it. Because cranking on every song is not good, it throws the whole song off. 3. Power, with power you need size (not necessarily) txsu is not very big but try can project across the stadium, because if you can't project your sound across the stadium then what good are you.
  • I agree with everything you said. I Look for those 2 things along with 3 Creativity.

    1) Sound (Tune)

    2) Entertainment (Wow factor)

    3) Creativity (What set you apart from the rest)

I don't count auxiliary either. However, they do add to the sparkle to the overall performance.

  • Me it's
    1 overall vision
2 do you have your own style
3 a certain structure of creativity & tradition
