Why Give DCI credit?

People need to stop giving DCI bands credit that they really don't deserve. No doubt, they're GREAT, but why compare what HBCU's do, to what Drum Corps & DCI bands do

I recently saw these posts beneath the NCA&T clip by HBCUbands.com and  here were the comments. From a DCI guy basically...

Wow Finally an HBCU Band finally takes the steps and uses DCI Routines in there own show. Finally!!!!! The three Line at the end was just like the Line from DCI Madison Scouts 2013 Show. At Least a Show band finally uses DCI and Show Style methods. Thats how you win. Way to Go Aggie Pride. Something that all the rest of the bands need to take note of.
2nd comment...

Yeah they finally did what the other HBCU couldn't do. Finally using some DCI mix in with Show style methods. Something the other bands need to start doing. And then everyone keeps on bragging on Southern University being number one. Yeah right. SU band has been doing the same thing every year nothing different. But Glad A&T Won it. That show was freaken awesome. I watch it twice and i was like

Reading this in a sense Kills me, because I feel that folks want to give Credit to DCI bands that they do not deserve.  No Doubt the one band he mentioned was obviously an influence on The shows ending. But still, don't come in and make it seem like What they did worth giving all credit to DCI for. This guy apparently hasn't seen bands like UAPB, MVSU, Prairie View and Many other Shows in the past to have an opinion like this. And above all to Knock The Human Jukebox in the Process of Congratulating A&T a band who was not there at all. but goes to show you who's on their minds... I know this guy isn't from A&T but it shows where the competition stands.

NCA&T Is a great band and they Deserve all the credit for doing what they do. But don't sit here and credit DCI or Drum Corp bands for what NCA&T pulled off there.. No Doubt what they did is typically seen in Corps Competitions like DCI and Bands of America, but really though. do we have to give them credit for   Usage of style? No.. Because if a Corps band does box drills in 8 to 5 the first thing someone will say is "well they invented the style anyway" ...

And Clearly Honda has a "Winner" now! HAHA! GET IN THERE A&T!!

LET NCA&T Undisputedly Have their Great Moment! THEY DESERVE IT!

  • well said BookATron

  • so every swac band is the same???

  • Great post and his knock about SU I took it as you know that your band is still one of the best when you still the subject of discussion

  • A&T was "different." That's about it. Was not that entertaining ...to me. Different isn't enough. Go for great. Do you and do it great.

SCSU same thing. Doing Ohio State and not doing it that well.

Band is art. Musicians are artists. It's best to do you and not be a follower. Band director, be an artist, not a rip-off artist

"Everybody's got a thing, but some don't know how to handle it. Always reaching out in vain in search of what others have." Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry Bout A Thing.
  • What some people don't realize is that DCI was utilizing traditional marching before they moved into the geometric drill designs and motions that they use today.
  • The guy relied Backing up his word in the youtube llink  agree with him I will post it soon

  • SCSU used drum corps aspects at beginning of their lovely show at Honda 2012. I just think since A&T had a great show and was voted #1 by fans is why everyone was hyped.

  • people give DCI WAAAAYYYYY too much credit....first off DCI is NOT i repeat NOT a marching style....it's a gotdamn organization!!! secondly, half of the DCI bands are overrated as hell and on top of that, core style is not as exciting as people try to make it.....i came from a core style band and went to an HBCU (Tennessee State) and trust me when i say core style and DCI bands don't deserve any props for OUR creativity!! plus Core bands been biting off us for the longest....

  • And so it begins... "Your band will have to do a hybrid/diverse show to have a shot at winning." The message has been sent.

A band is a band right? But that stuff you negros do isn't serious. Oh no! You must perform "some" of our stuff to be considered a "serious" band, in the band world - doesn't matter how sloppy it looks. And it's no surprise Atlanta and those folks up the East coast ate it up. Like I said, 5th quarter is always flooded with some "white folks have this, why don't we" topics.

Refer to the "showband blah blah" topic.

  • Marching style is just like an instrument.  You can't give a Bach Strad to a beginner and expect him to sound like Wynton, just like you can't just throw corps style (let's spell it correctly, people) techniques in there an automatically have a good show.

Whether it's music, marching, photography, drag racing, etc., the instrument, style, camera, and car are just the tool.  It's up to the individual to create success by using those tools the right way to accomplish a given task.

I have a love for all the marching musical arts, whether it's an HBCU band, DCI corps, military band or whatever--and I get influence from all sources, band and non-band-related.  The product you see on the field is the result of planning to tell a story and convey a message and THEN selecting the tools for the job, not the other way around...
