How can bands participate?

Participating bands will receive a Block Band arrangement of "Harlem Shake" arranged by our own, Manuel Hernandez. All participants will receive the same arrangement.  Contact us at contests@blockbandmusic.com to get your arrangement.

The winner will receive $150.00 in FREE Block Band merchandise Block Band merchandise includes: Spats, shoes (instrumentalist & auxiliaries), gloves, mouthpieces, reeds, flags, drumheads, drumsticks, mallets, cymbals, traditional concert band music, and more.  (Free merchandisde does not include arrangements).

How do I submit my band’s entry?

Record your band playing Block Band’s "Harlem Shake" arrangement. Only the following edits can be made to the arrangement:

You can decide to change the percussion parts

You have the liberty to change the section that will play the "rhythmic" part of the arrangement. For instance, you can decide to use both the trombone and baritone sections as a whole or assign individual players from either section to play the rhythmic part. You may also decide to add saxophones and mellophones as you see fit.

Repeats can be added.

It is recommended, but not required, to play the last note of the song.

Although the arrangement can only be edited as detailed above, we want to see your band’s creativity come through in their presentation. So feel free to edit the video to maximize the effect of the "Harlem Shake." The band that exhibits the most creativity through dancing, antics, or scenario have a better chance to make it to the finals. The key is to be creative!

Block Band staff will select 5 finalists to move on to the final round. There will be a 3-day public voting period on YouTube.

The band with the most "LIKES" (not views) will be crowned the "Harlem Shake" Contest winner.

What Are Those Details Again?

Teach your band the Block Band arrangement of the "Harlem Shake"

Think of how you want to present it on video

Record your band’s rendition of the "Harlem Shake"

Send your video to Block Band at contests@blockbandmusic.com by 11:59 pm on 5/18/2013

Included in this post is our arrangement of the "Harlem Shake"

Here's How to interpret it.

You may want to have only one person say the spoken part, but it’s up to you.  It ok to use the voice from the original recording.

The idea is that you are going through your everyday routine warming up to the Bb scale.

As you get into it, the melody (which is the repeated part) should come in and become the major focus.  Continue the Bb scale as written but do not let that dominate the music.  The chromatic part adds to the tension of the song as in the original but should be slightly beneath the instruments playing the Bb scale in balance.

It’s not necessary to play the last note, but it will give a way to conclude the song.

Most importantly have fun.

The Harlem Shake Contest has Officially Started

Hey,

Just wanted to let you know. We are now accepting videos for our contest.

Here's a thought.

Out of all of our customers we only had 2 videos submitted for our last contest.

2 bands walked away with over $350 in products from Block Band with little competition at all.

I am sure they will both submit videos again. Are you going to just let them take the money?

I know you guys are busy, but seriously wouldn't some free stuff ($150 worth) take the stress off?

Sincerely,

D. Rashad Watters
