Bands are the Heart of the Fans

While at the GSU vs PV Slaughterfest (Football wise) a PV fan walked up beside me and said these exact words.

"If the band would have played more Spirited and fire up songs we probably would have stood a better chance. Dont yall know how to get the crowd wired up so they can support the football team?"

He kept on talking about it while being shooed up the stairs by his wife but i just wanted to see other folks opinions on this....

Do you feel that bands ultimately control whether or not the fans support the team?

while thinking about your response think about what bands play before kick offs, what they play when the team is losing, what they play when the team is winning......

  • The bands are always in control regarding the fact that the spectators Truly come to see them.
HBCU football is horrid, without the bands it's nothing.
as for the Football teams relationship with the band,, to me .. it's almost like Theatrical music.. you know things are about to get hype in the movie because the music sets the tone... and well. it's like that sometimes in the game. but I don't think it helps that Much so that a team would turn in to rocky Balboa.. you know what i mean?
  • My question to that dude would have been, "Do you know the words to our school fight song? If you want to get the band to get the fans to cheer for the football team, your fans should at least sing the words to the fight song EVERYTIME the band plays it."

Something about 5000-10000 folks singing your school fight song should get anybody riled up....

    That's a start...
  • You're right .. to be honest. there are songs that bands have had in the reps for decades that Everybody should know the words to.. Those are "football support" tunes too.

alot of folks don't "get it"

  • well honestly i think half the at almost every school the football teams or program does not care for the bands cuz if they did there wouldnt be any swac rules regarding the bands. they didnt complain in the 90's or the early 2000's but anyway most of the times fans want to hear what they here on the radio bcuz no party is good without the music so i think that the bands dont really control whether the football team or fans get crunk its about making sure u keep the crowd hype and yo team as well besides they be mad cuz bands steal the shine at the game especially if they lost. ony my opinion.
  • You can tell which fans take their football seriously and which fans are just there.

Comparing the big PWC football schools to most HBCU schools, the fan participation at those big schools ALONE is enough to intimidate the opposing team. We not even gonna mention how their bands get the crowd to participate.

At our HBCUs, the fans just wanna hear the latest hip hop radio tune...and even then they might just sit there and clap. They won't stand up and get crunk...and they'll be dayumed if they cheer for their team. Our fans are too "cute" for that...

  • Truer words have never been spoken.....

They don't know the countless hours put in to try to put on a good show or play music that has been requested just so the crowd can get hype....then when u play their songs they feel too cool to get up and cheer.....smh

  • ^^^^^^

thats it right there. Sum think they to cool to cheer, or to old to cheer.

whats the point in talking ish if you dont, cheer, yell words of encouragement or even wave your 10 dollar pom-pom your waste'in space.
  • i think its the older fans that sit there like a bump on a log. I can say our younger fans and new addition "crunk crew" get hype with the band and help cheer on our football team with the band. Maybe its different at every school.
  • ^^^I was thinking that.....the band could play the Overture of 1812 and actually have the real cannon at the end and alot of those fans will just sit and look. Especially the older fans around here........

But to add to the initial idea of the thread......when our team was introduced, there was about 1/10 the applause as when the announcer said "......now welcome to the field, The Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South!!!" The applause for the band sounded like a game winning touchdown.

I will say this tho....and the large pwcs, the fans come to participate.....most of our fans come to spectate.
  • yup folks just be there to see who looks the "cleanest'..lol like a fashion show nothing more nothing less
