BCU's No Screaming Policy

This is a topic taken from the 5thquarter.com. I just wanted to get some of the opinions of the people from this site.

"I read a post a while back about BCU's trumpets not being allowed to "take parts up." I never really paid attention to it before, but since then I realize wow their trumpets really don't scream. I'm sure they have some that can, but they are forbidden.

Good or bad? The obvious benefit is they are accurate and clean...trumpet accuracy is diminished the higher you play. However it could be argued there is a certain level of excitement and intensity that is missing.

Good or bad? Is it worth it? Are they the only band with a no-screaming policy?"

  • I say, if their trumpets can hit it...let them do it....designate a couple screamers for their section

I'm not asking them to scream like JSU trumpets, but it would be nice to hear something from them on a more consistent basis

  • no need to scream, when everyone plays their part, it will be heard.
  • True, i like BCU just the way they are. Only thing i feel they should do is upgrade their book. I'm very impressed with BCU's sound. Met up with them two times face to face and they are the truth.

  • What if its written in the music?

I can't speak for all schools but D's E's and F's are written above the staff in the music for 1st trumpets at SU

Hell in 05 when we played "And Then What" the whole trumpet part had 8va over it at the end and the notes went as high as Concert G's

  • Play the music and make it sound good. If you scream, work on it being in tune and with a full round tone. Express yourself through music, execute the arrangement and be a creative fundamentally sound musician.

    Should John Faddis not scream?
Miles Davis not wail and "bend" notes?
Is Arturo Sandoval a 5rashy" player because he screamed? I'm pretty sure if he sat in some MEAC band's badhall and screamed on some arrangement, they wouldn't run up and down on some "man stop that ish, it sounds bad. You're SWACING"...he'd probably say "y chinga tu madre".....
  • BCU does trumpets do scream, they just dont focus on it.
  • staying in the staff does not necessarily make u cleaner and screaming does not make u a beast. Its all about how u work on what YOU do. I personally like trumpets up there because its apart of the range of the horn so use it. But BCU has a great sound so they should keep their style.
  • BCU needs to upgrade that book of theirs.
  • Is it too much to ask to just play the music that's written on the paper?

Like it was mentioned earlier, if an arranger wanted the trumpets to scream and take parts up in the music, it would be written in.  Why let your ego do injustice to the music that is in your face by creating parts at your discretion?  It makes you seem musically illiterate, and on top of that, it doesn't sound as good as some might want to think.

I think it's a good thing that BCU can show musical discipline and follow the written music.  They sound a hell of a lot better than most bands that allow sections to create parts and change stuff around at will.

Nothing is wrong with screaming trumpets.  But I think there is a time and a place for everything.  If you wanna scream and take parts up whenever you feel like it, join a jazz band and ad lib to your heart's content...like some of the jazz legends did who were mentioned.

    ~that's just my opinion though~

  • I'm a Marching Wildcat and our trumpet can scream they just don't because of this rule from staff. But in fanfares they do get up there in range. I do agree very much with the upgrading of the book!
