  • very much so....
  • and once again...................
  • i say yea...because it makes your band have a more richer, fuller sound. Small bands (most small band) sound thin nd try to crank up , but end up soundin like garbage...

and plus bigger bands draw larger amounts of ppl to join their band. i.e. bcu, famu, scsu

  • Small bands can be successful...it's tough for them, but it can happen.....prime example is the N.O. botb last year....baker came and beat out most of the bigger bands....another example was St. Aug vs SWD....As for the collegiate level, FAMU doesn't win EVERY time.......no disrespect to them tho
  • in ATL we've seen the opposite. of course were talking HS, but both MLK and MG have good consistent programs, but theyve both shrunk to half what they used to be.  So even if a program is consistent, it may not grow.

On the collegiate level, you expect to see at least a 200piece band. Smaller college bands are very reminiscent of high school. A small band can be good and very entertaining (I personally am a fan of Edward Waters) but a good small or medium sized band cannot do the things or put on the type of show that a good large band can do.

Band size is also related to how great a program is. For instance, Bethune Cookman is a small University with less that 3,000 students but their band has over 300 members. Many students attend BCU just to be apart of the band because of the level of respect and admiration they have for the program. It is common knowledge that the Marching 100 of Florida A&M is the largest HBCU band, one of the oldest (if not the oldest), and definitely one of the most respected and well known. The band itself has over 400 members and continues to be a staple in HBCU bands. Its legacy of greatness and contributions over the generations continues to recruit students from all over the world. Even in the SWAC, the largest bands generally are the best and most respected: Southern, JSU, etc... Now all of the programs I named started out as small programs but their dedication to greatness and striving to be the best at what they do has increased their popularity which is why they are so big.

So in short, a good band can be small, but if it is consistently good (consistency is the key), over time it will become a large program because of the popularity it will attain.

CAN A BAND BE SUCCESFULL WITHOUT BEING BIG??
most ppl think in order for bands to be succesfull they gotta be big. do yall think thats true?
  • actually you can recruit in HS if your school has a magnet program, which is SWD's secret to success.  They have many people in their band that are supposed to go to other schools.  Thats also why Arabia Mountain went from 45 people last year to 115-ish people this year.

Youre absolutely right - High School programs can still be small and good. They also can garner more respect than their larger counterparts. There is a major difference though with size in HS vs college because high school programs are not able to affect recruitment due to school zones and other stuff wherein on the college level it is a "free for all" in recruitment. So you do have good small bands and big crappy ones in high school.

  • People nowadays get side eyed by the size of a band....if a big band is marching 80-120...people automatically assume that their program is successful but in many cases which happnd before it could just be a bunch of oldheads and random musicians....but a small band can come along and people may say..aww well look like dey struggling....that's how some people are these days...now when I see a big band I say damn and just wait until I hear some notes to say anything about them.

Some big bands sound shitty but just bcuz of their size ppl will say they were top band...Smh
