  • ahh well i think its just the fact that most showbands(if they do concert) are still focusing on stuff like mardigras and rodeo parade and stuff like that (houston bands btw) and dont give concert band their all, i believe my band has dont pretty good these last couple of years, but at the same time we really dont attend parades or botb during concert season, but we dont totally forget about marching....i believe ppl should just give the same inportance to both and worry more about being music in general and not just marching band....just my opinion though
  • well honestly most showstyle marching bands dont have the correct instruments for concert band.  Also most minority schools students are so much farther behind musically being that they are beginners in the 8th and 9th grade versus some districts where band is offered in elementary school.

However, Westbury did a killer job at UIL I think two years ago.  People are still talking about that.  Also Yates did a fair representation.

  • Like nick pointed out, if its really and truly about the music, it wont matter what tune we put on the stands. The same level of pride, dedication and discipline SHOULD be applied to the concert season too.

  • True, most HS are behind but I think some people are just satisfied where they are. Like Kevin Garnett said, "its like a Bar Fight" trying to get programs off the ground and flying again. The opportunities we have come far and few in between. but when we finally get to the door, kick that MOFO DOWN! '(like a Austin,Westbury and coutless others)

Always Be Ready'...that's my battle cry....

    Concert Festivals( Corp vs Show)
Why do showbands hs suck so bad in concert season? lol
  • plain and simple... because most of them do not find concert effective or useful when in fact thats the whole foundation on what our show bands &  Corp style are found from Sound Wise.......I tell my children all the time great concert band, great marching band.... great concert and jazz band, legendary marching band.....LOL..... if you want proof here are some of the schools I know that have great concert bands... IN NO ORDER.. THEY ARE ALL EQUAL TO ME

WILLORIDGE (HOUSTON TX)- dose concert, UIL MArching competions and gets 1's every time, wonderful jazz band.end result monster program.

WALTIRP (Houston,TX)- Most folks don't consider them A show band  but I do when these kats want to get donw and blow they will... but there concert band and jazz band are plain and simple are killers.

TOWNVIEW ( Dallas,TX) VERY VERY good concert band and jazz band they always have a nice sound.

O.P.WALKER(New Orleans,LA) I had a chance to see some clips on their concert band.... Man those kids can play.....Just look who there band Director is (WILL RAWLINGS!!!!).....ENUFF SAID.

ST AUG (New Orleans,LA) the  old version of ST.AUG had a very good concert band very sharp and clean, they would kill a march  in a second...

    G.W.CARVER(New Orleans,LA) AGAIN ANOTHER WILLBERT RAWLING'S PRODUCTION... I THINK THAT'S ENUFF

SWD"SOUTH WEST DEKAB" (Alanta,GA)- MAN there are plenty of clips of these kats working hard on concert peaice's and it pays off just listen to there sound.

so in conclusion all the band that i know off do not suck at concert season.. im currently working on my band to do better its not all about marching band with my high school if it was i would not get any place no time soon that crazy doc.....

Honorable mention- (Westbury) bust ones last year at UIL concerts..... that means alot to me more than anything because they show true musicanship, that they can do any and everything as long as you work hard.

(Yates) - they may not have gotten 1's but there grade improves every year... and to me that a good thing the sound is blending nicely too

Welll these are the only ones i hear When Davis goes to concert festival... everybody eles I eaither missthere showing at the festival or they dont show.

  • If you need more proff i will upload some clips to listen and look at.

  • I like those responses. I will add that in concert season my fellow bandheads; articulation, key signature, dynamics, eyes on the band director, blending within the band, and the feel of the music are most important. Not having concert instrument is not an excuse. I was in a corp band and those were the keys to sweepstakes every single festival, no lie. If i were a band director and I know my schools tradition was based on showstyle marching, then i would at least one day out the week or the first few minutes of class after warm ups; begin practice on a difficult piece of music," a 4 or 3 piece of music", till its perfected. learning a march should be simple cause yall already know them. And sight reading is very important.

  • I feel what you're saying if you were a band director and Im not making excuses but directing an inner city band is a struggle.  Number one its hard to get kids to be in band POINT BLANK....  Number two theres no budget to do anything with.  Number three we have countless distractions.  Since every city has an all star band and alumni band, students are choosing to do that instead of their own bands (no offense to any all star band in particular) Number four- scheduling.  Inner city schools are focusing more on academics so students have to take math twice AND science twice.  10th and 11th graders cant take elective classes including band so what little time you do have after school is moving double time playing catch up.

Im not making excuses because as said before some schools have worked around it like Yates, Westbury and Willowridge.  Thats less than 10% and your are right in our bands need to do better but most of us are barely holding on now.

  • Your situation sounds complicated. Not the case for many bands though.

  • Wow, not sure wat you are use to Kush, but Goldy's situation sounds like a lot of programs I know. Look, we can make comparison to others all day til we blue in the face. Every group has its issues. But performance day the audience or judges won't care what we had to go through to get here. They are gonna want a show! So I appreciate all the directors who put in work everyday, making it happen with whatever they got.....it inspires me.
