Because of history of certain bands, I wonder if there is in fact a correlation between hazing and the band being good? The bands who have, in recent years, experienced the most press due to hazing allegations-- Jackson State, Southern, and most recently FAMU are, in my opinion, three of the top HBCU bands in the nation. FAMU has always been the "IT" band of the MEAC, and the SWAC would be BORING AS HELL, were it not for JSU and SU (although, the last few years, SWAC bands have really been stepping up their game). I will hold my opinion for now. But to digress, and I truly mean this with all due respect, YOU GOTTA BE A DAMN FOOL TO LET SOMEONE WHOOP YO ASS TO THE POINT WHERE YOU SERIOUSLY INJURED! << It is NOWHERE near that serious. Not one of these band sections is nationally, or even locally for that matter recognized! Ya health comes before everything. I'm presently a trumpet player of an HBCU band (last year yes Lawd!!) and also a member Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and there was never a time I was willing to risk my well-being for those letters, which I love dearly with all my heart! You a man(and woman lol) before anything. I hope this is a message to those who have been through "processes", and especially new band members. I would like to hear your comments on this topic.

to answer your question no. And the reason I say that is because honestly the aura of a good band comes by way of DISCIPLINE, not necessarily HAZING. Supposedly Norfolk State doesn't do ANYTHING that would be considered hazing, and the only reason i am using them is because of the whole SU mello section scandal a few years ago, where the guy ended up transferring to NSU and speaking to reporters about it.....
I can go out on a limb and say 90% of HBCU bands use quote unquote "hazing" tactics but are all 90% viewed as good? I can also say that the more reknowned and recognized bands in our culture DO NOT use HAZING tactics but by many of their peers they are view as beasts.
Ill just say that while the bands who have been brought up on these hazing allegations over the years are some of (if not) the best HBCU bands in the country, that is not enough to say that "because we haze, we will be a great band"....

I am from Jackson, went to JSU bt didnt get in the band bc i knew i wasnt gonna stay at Jxn, St. There's always something goin on with them whether its hearsay or fact about hazing. It would be an ill statement to doubt that these three bands are not the premiere HBCU bands today. There are other great bands too but these bands, historically esp JSU and SU have had the much of the hazing allegations mess with their reputations. They even made an HBCU documentary on it..

There was a series on ESPN-U called the Season last week that featured Grambling's band season. They showed the staff disciplining students who missed practice, or were late, by running stadium steps and doing push-ups. That's the point, the staff is only supposed to discipline, not your peers. I think the problem with FAMU was the band was too damn big. How can a staff of less than 20 instructors manage a group of 300-400? That doesn't make sense. They may just need to limit band membership to FAMU students only. SU has a much more managable size band so each director can watch the actions of the students closer.

what i meant by this statement was that this argument can go either way because for the bands who have not been caught doing anything or not doing anything, who is it to say that they are good or they aren't because of the use of or lack of use of hazing tactics.
