When we had the first N.O. all star band it was exciting because we knew that the best of the best was there, but we never ever at one time wanted to be a all year thing for the simple fact we wanted to battle with our own high school bands. Tell me how you feel about this ????

  • A lot of schools are cutting back on funding.
  • Isnt there sumthing that we as a band community can do to reserve our programs???
  • When I was in highschool we had taped p drums and horns and it still didn't matter because we had a little something you call pride and school spirit.
  • For some people, the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side, even when they get to the other side.

I like and support all All-Star bands. But I HATE when it's the regular school year and kids talk about they're not gonna do anything for their high school band because they have the All-Star to fall back on. So just skip 9-10 months of playing experience for 1 month, plus the occasional event throughout the year. That is the sorriest shyt I've ever seen from a band member in my life.

Please ask me for a recommendation. I dare you.
  • well as someone who did look forward to allstar band i know why they would be excited.. coming together to make somthing like that is great. ill always remember that first song we played my first year in allstar. but we all still had our school pride and we reped it often. new orleans allstar alumni 2002-2004
  • I am a band parent, and I live in j-ville, fl. We just moved here in July, and my daughter is looking for an all star band to participate in, not because she doesn't want to do anything with her high school band(which she loves and I believe she will cut off her right toe to participate in). It's because she loves marching season and battling with other bands. When we lived in Columbus Ga, she was a part of the all star band there. It did not interfere with regular band because it ran from Feb until July. Band season there fizzled out after football season and only participated in activites like parades, she was bored in the interm and the all-star band gave her something to do. She wants to start an all star band here in jville, but she doesn't know how.
  • You know something, The difference between N.O's all star band and other all star bands is that it was the School System's All Star band... we didn't put our school bands Before the All star band. and because we were only a "once a year" band. it didnt interfere with what our bands were doing.

if you didnt march for your schools band, you couldnt participate because you were chosen to be in the all star band by your directors. and they only were allowed to choose the Best players in their bands. and then they added secondaries. due to the size of the band declining.

We could not say "Well Hey Lets go Join The All Star Band" .. NO YOU HAD TO QUALIFY FOR THE BAND!! ..lol
And If you Sucked you got embarrassed in front of the whole band.

.. I remember when we had to know. J-Thu-O of the Concert Band Clinic By Heart . LOL that was the real all star band ..LOL

Nah really we only had to know A Thru H, because we warmed up with them..

Our All Star Band was Only a 3 week Practice Session from the first week of December to the 15 where we eventually preformed at the ALL-STAR Football Game. and an NFL performance..

That was Our all Star band..

It wasnt Just a Community band of People who just wanted to Get away from their own bands..
  • GHASB is run by HISD......

either way....I remember when JAckson kinda got an all-star band.....the directors went against it cause they said it interfered with concert season and it wasn't worth goin out and blowing blowing blowing......
i think had it been through JPS it woulda been a different story...

It's a shame that kids today get more excited about All-Star bands than their own high school progr…

  • I dunno why they dnt want to put their home schools first seeing that u get alot more playing and learning time in with high school band. Maybe its the trips, high profile events, the exposure, and alot of the kids want the experience of being part of a "Big Band" which nowadays are non-existant for high school showbands. I can understand their excitement but cant understand why they are not putting more heart into their own high school bands.
  • back in the 90's we had corporate sponsered allstar bands similar to what u are talking about it was Concert band tho. But thats not even around anymore. So i give credit for directors getting together and doing something cause music education is not what it used to be. Cant blame it all on the kids. Props to Cleve and Tilford (North Forest) for giving their students the chance to experience all genre's of music. Not jus the entertainment side... We need more of that.
