  • who would they be playing?

it was be nice if they would bring back that Las Vegas Classic.

It was actually a really nice attendance when SU vs NCATSU played in 2003.

  • Unless Dr. Meyers paying, the Boom ain't going. It's already been discussed amongst the staff. They're going to play UNLV.
  • for a game like that, just like SU-UGA, doesnt the larger white school plays for the band travel???

Jackson State first game in Vegas next year.
I'm pretty sure they're going to take the band. Once this becomes official I'm booking a ticket. To see them j settes buck Vegas down.
  • Not necessarily. It's all up to the schools whether or not to put the band in the contract. We are planning to build new facilities for our football team in the near future so they're probably planning to keep every penny for the football team they can just to help out. It would be nice if the band could go though. Would be a good experience for the band students.

  • well, honestly, I dont think JSU would schedule a game all the way in Vegas and not have it in the contract to bring the band.

Im sure JSU is using this for recruitment, for football and band. Theres FAR too many out-of-conference schools, and lower-tier schools in and around Mississippi they could play if they were just looking for a non-conference game to fill the schedule.
My guess is that the other school will be paying for their travel. That (football and band recruitment) would be one of the ONLY benefits of going all the way to Vegas to play a football game.

  • Well the band ain't in the contract for this one. I jus told you the reason the game was probably scheduled because it is a money game. Recruitment wise we're good in football and band (obviously). This ain't the first OOC game the Boom didn't go to and probably won't be the last.

  • well thats bad business by JSU. cause one of the BENEFITS of playing an OOC is for an ALL EXPENSE PAID TRIP. But get that money though. Doesnt make no sense for it to be a "money game", and band travel is not included.

  • You're thinking from a bandhead perspective. OOC games are for the football team, not the band. If we are building new facilities for our football team and getting some extra money from a money game to do so, where is this "bad business" you're preaching? The band doesn't need this trip lol.

  • no. I am thinking from the OVERALL experience from football team to band. Again, if we are considering it a "money game", then one of the benefits is both football team and band being able to participate. (SU vs LaTech, SU vs Georgia, Alcorn vs Georgia Tech, AAMU vs Auburn, etc)..

I'm saying, JSU shouldve fought to write it into the contract a little harder. Cause its been proven for YEARS that the band also brings fans. It's true for most HBCU's.

You think Georgia still wouldve had 90k at a FOOTBALL game is SU's band wasnt coming? hell naw.

Its about the whole experience of white people being able to see talented African Americans, and also for the band to be able to recruit and showcase their talents to an area that probably knows nothing about HBCU's.

With the band not being in the contract, what the tells me is that this "money game" is not really paying much. Just my thoughts about it.

  • Do you know how much it would cost to fly out a 250+ member band for the weekend? Hotels, food, and not to mention travel from the hotel to the stadium? It would be way too much money to spend. It cost $65,000 for just a regular 7 hour trip and thats hotel, buses, food. Our football team could keep all that money and use it towards the new facilities which makes more sense. You're comparing us to other schools but at JSU, our football team always comes first before the band unlike maybe SU. Honestly, we'd rather the money go to things needed for the football team anyway. If it wasn't for them, there would be no band. I don't think you realize how much more we support our football team in Jackson. We gone always be good on recruitment because we get students every year from places you wouldn't even expect.
