Military marching in Texas.....

Scenario.....Take the best show style bands in the state...say Willowridge, Worthing, TV etc....Give them military marches with the same drills (modified for military time)...Enter them into a MILITARY marching contest. How do you think they will be judged? How do you think they would place?

  • Like a boss... No show band could play a Sousa or king... Sorry

  • Why would you say that?

"One" reason show bands receive low scores, is the same reason military bands received poor marks from UIL in the past. UIL folks never cared for non-corps bands.

Around the late 90's after military style directors made a fuss, UIL started rating military bands fairly. Around the same time they allowed "a" show band to showcase - one ****a at a time policy. And that band - Willowridge - had to perform "their way" first. Which I think is ridiculous.

Why are the show bands forced to march corps but the military bands aren't?

As with all things the Negro does, show bands are considered inferior when viewed by the dominant society. They should boycott UIL like the white military bands did. But that's politically impossible. And I wouldn't put my career on the line these days. You get folks all excited then when it's time to face the, power, you're alone.

    But your comment is ridiculous.

I'm assuming you're black attending a white school. You either pop out like me or come out boot-licking . Remember, the result is the same... You'll never be accepted.

  • What makes you think that? A lot of show style bands play marches very well.

  • this thread was made in the 1800's tho..

  • The only 2 show bandd we have around here arent that good. Lol... 3rd divisions are the highest they get... Military does look down on everyone else because we do have what is believed to be the harder style. But I love true show bands because they just look fun.
  • And im white going to a black school by the way lol. Southern and grambling are the two best show bands in the world even though they dont get along and Northwestern State University is my favorite band over all, and they are corp
  • Neither style is better than the other.  Corps style and military both are super clean styles, Showband is more difficult to judge because of the various types.  When I asked the judges they told me point blank: Most showbands dont do it right, poor execution, sloppy horn carriage and lack of uniformity.  They said they enjoy the style if done correctly and mentioned Southern and 1980s and early 90s Prairie View but according to the UIL rubric, it is difficult to meet those standards due to lack of or limited  instrumentation and a different mindset of the students.

  • The only "Military" marching contest would be the NAMMB (National Association of Military Marching Bands) contests usually held in East Texas.

I do agree with the idea that military bands haven't gotten a fair shake is because corps is the dominant style but there has been a resurgence of military bands competing at UIL Area marching contests. However, it is the smaller classifications that do well and advance to the State Marching Contest.

The last time a 5A military-style band went to state was Kingwood back in 1998. There were 3 military bands in class 3A that made state last year.

As to being unfairly judged, a lot of military bands have been adding some "corps" elements like having a sideline pit percussion or doing non-military formations.

I did corps in school and in college but have grown to enjoy show and military bands. When done well, they are very exciting to watch. Like one poster said, i don't think one style is better than the other but it is difficult judging 3 different styles in one contest (my home region, Region 10, is one example where you have a lot of small rural schools, some large towns, and then Beaumont/Baytown).

Yes, show style does get scrutinized much more. Goldy_1914 said it best. I'm not sure if I have seen many straight show-style marching show for UIL (an example would be Carter HS in the Dallas area). A lot of show bands seem to do hybrid show-corps style.

I do find interesting that a lot of bands in the northeast and mid-west United States march show style and they are mostly white bands.

    Sorry for the rambling.

  • I graduated from Northwestern State and marched with the Spirit of Northwester for 2 years.

  • I don't know.

I don't appreciate how people treat show style bands like they aren't relevant in the band world, even when their book is usually 20x bigger than most corp style schools and they are far more exciting.

Honda BotB isn't making it any better by not trying to integrate corp style schools into the competition... Our schools are integrated, why not our bands?
