Musicianship...Where has it gone?

So im going to say it "where's the musicianship?" It seems like all bands every where care about one thing and thats blowing loud, out of the context and character of their instruments. I attend and play trumpet for Tennst. and I know A LOT of y'all think our band program is sorry and boring, but how many of y'all can say that you have learned something at your band program?? I'm not a music major I like just like playing trumpet, but I can say I have learned plenty and that has helped me to become a better musician. I know y'all have heard a lot of these high school bands nowadays. I know for a fact bands in Memphis are going down and everywhere else too. We as college students should be encouraging younger generations to practice more and practice correctly focusing on good sound and technical fundamentals. If we keep going on and on about cranking and being loud the future of bands will eventually die...as it already is. We got to get back to focusing on playing music well.

  • People may say that TNSU is boring, but I have never heard sorry and TNSU in the same sentence.

Yes, we are a power band, but I think there have been many times(more than some will admit) where we have shown that we can do more than just "blow the hair piece off of someone's head".

A lot of once proud high school band programs fell off a few years ago here in Louisiana, but it appears many of our bands are making a comeback.

I always liked a band that could play with power while also showing good technique and marching fundamentals.
  • "see, we can play all the technical stuff.....we just know we need to be krankin!"
  • I think the approach some of our bands take is all wrong. I am certain there are techniques to playing with power and quality at the same time. But bands these days tend to focus on "power first, quality last"....when it should be the other way around.

I LOVE the energy (not just in terms of volume) that some of these bands put out. But when quality is sacrificed for energy, it can have drawbacks on effectiveness.

If your band sounds bad at a normal volume, why do you think your band will sound better at a projected volume? The only thing worse than a trashy sounding band...is a loud, trashy sounding band. What's the point of being super crunk, when your band can get outplayed by second graders?

IMO, bands SHOULD work on the total music package (proper attacks, releases, phrasing, etc.) FIRST, and then "normalize" the sound when they get the total package perfected....so to speak.
  • first of all WHAT UP MARCO MANE!!!!! but anyway my question is Is it the band members or the band director that's a fault in this situation??
  • The band is always a reflection of the director that runs it. So IMO, the director is at fault...
