  • Well when you all go to sectionals, you all need to be about seriousness, there is to much playfullness going on, its time to buckle down, this pass Friday you all played Murrah, they had over 20 trumpets but you all need to recruit & nee to start doing crunches everyday, lip slurs. The time yall spend hanging out together is time yall can be practicing, just look at the other sections arround you, look at the best section in the band, those section leaders do not take any crap they handle there business but yall lack leadership in yall section

  • well so far i have been doing crunches sit up long tones and petal tones...
  • Well the first thing I will say is that a strong foundation will be maditory for ur section. Basically playing as a section, know whose gonna play what (i.e in the upper register) because ppl can do all the screamn and it will sound weak if its not supported by the rest of the section. Make sure everyone is puting the proper amount of AIR in the instrument, make sure no one is playing so loud they are distorting the sound of the horn. A good proper warm up is always important, pedals, lip slurs, buzzing the mouthpiece will always help get the blood flowing in ur lips. The main thing is for you all to play as a section, it can be in the staff, but as long as you all play together you all should not have a problem. And if u have any of those trumpet players that rest out the whole song and wait for that one note or part (then miss it when it comes) you can do better with out them.Hope my advice helps a lil. Check the sizes of ur sections mouthpieces to. Deeper cup gives a thicker sound.
  • All of those are exact & valid points!!! I've found an exercise that would work in addition to what you may already be doing for all brass. They are called "Lead Pipe Exercises". you place your mouth on the lead pipe, and blow long tones or "play" a song just blowing fast, warm air through the horn without the mouthpiece. This will increase the air flow/speed thru the horn. Many young brass players merely play into, rather than thru the horn. Also being able to play what's on the page together, is better that having one or two superstars trying to carry the whole section because of the upper register!!! There is absolutely NO substitution for daily individual practice, as well as playing together as a section. But take it SERIOUS as a Section!!!
