Post 2011 HONDA Band Question!!!!

This is question for everybody!!! What makes a band a great band??????

All I hear is SWAC talking crazy about every other school non-SWAC, like we just garbage, like we didnt go to the same HIGH SCHOOLS!!!! Every HBCU band has players I knew from high school or the surrounding areas in atlanta, so how all of sudden yall better? When I look at TSU show, for example, the only time they crank was at an stand still and when they were marching they weren't hitting 90's. So how was they show better than anybody else's?? People look for sound and thats it. What about Precision, Dynamics, Perfection, Intensity, and Discipline. I'm from BCU and Mr. Wells would make some of yall so called bands QUIT from just 2 weeks of practice in the summer!!!!! All you would do is THOUSANDS the whole practice LITERALLY! Good Clean STRONG SOUND and KNEE LIFT is what we produce over here at BCU! Let me know what yall think!

Don't bring the SWAC in this, it's individuals opinion. Everyone in the SWAC doesn't think alike. No one is a spokesmen for their band unless their the band director(s).

  • lol i'm just mad u brought TSU into it and we not swac!! i'm just sayin bro
  • Many peeps in the SWAC and MEAC have warped perceptions: notice i said many not all. Many seem to not know the meaning of variety. Many in the MEAC frown down on the SWAC because many bands in the SWAC play with the power mentality but there are others that don't and many in the SWAC frown down on the MEAC because they feel the MEAC is boring because they play with more of finesse style but all do not play with the same concept and all is relative.

Our people as a race seem to down each other more these days and that is sad. It's like many feel their bands are perfect and if you're not doing the same thing or similar then it's wrong when that is simple the mind in a box type of mentality. Just think if all bands did everything alike, how boring would that be? The MEAC has the perception that all bands in the SWAC just blow loud when that's not the case, many do and many have allowed playing with power take away from their program/traditional sound that made them who they are today but they don't realize that because of their pride and if with that if you can't beat them join them mentality. Many MEAC people, particularly on the 5thquarter act like all bands have the sound of FAMU and BCU when that is definitely not the case, just like all bands aren't power bands like Southern in the the SWAC,

Many bands that claim they are number one but they aren't really number one. How in the hell are you number one and you can't march and perform a nice drill on a consistent basis. Drilling is an aspect of MARCHING BAND isn't it? Stands doesn't get bands the gigs like Superbowl, Presidential Inaugural Parade etc. So neither conference can't really criticize each other because we are in the same boat. Both conference have a couple of one dimensional bands and the white people only see us as black bands that dance  which lack musical sense so i don't care how much one thinks his or her program is so good the big picture the world outside the black race see's HBCU bands as dancers. BTW, SWAC Bands do have concert band, wind ensembles etc. I hate when people from the MEAC think it's not happening.

The answer to your question is relative but from my Music Education Point of View "What Makes a Good Band is"

1.The director has to have standards, maintain his or her standards and never water it down for anyone.

2.Sound,Tone,Technique,Balance-all are relative to the directors standards

3.Style-It separates you apart from others. Your style can make you seem vanilla or it can demand ones attention, by simply playing the dynamics or playing the dynamics with over exaggeration can separate you from others. Style can make or break you.

4.Showmanship-Performing to the highest standard be it originality, musically, physically and uniformity with style and attitude. People seem to respect bands that are original.

5.Marching, can't get around it though some try, you have to know your basics and make sure you put energy into it. It separates you from being below average, average, good and great. Notice you don't see many great HBCU marching because only some take it serious. What's so hard for putting your all for 2 to 3 minutes in a drill(s), a couple of seconds marching to concert/dance formation and a couple of seconds coming off the field. The black race has become so lazy and it's sad and that's why bands were better back in the day because they wanted to look good in the stands and on the field, they just didn't focus on one area. So these 5 are a couple of things that make a good/great band.

  • Dawg this aint even a cool thing to bring up
  • You right but lately since honda everyboy from SWAC just go's gift to bands.. kudos to Kyron Rodriguez

  • Have you seen ANY of what's said and claimed about SWAC bands on MEAC sites? Even so far as to claim that the entire conference doesn't produce good musicians....or...even so far as to ASSUME our conference bands don't have strict, high regimened band camps...you know...as if anyone's bandcamp comes close to even a WEEK for sprinters and middle distance runners in college...I don't see "The Pride" on a weight program, squats, sprint intervals, three a day meet-style practices and yoga routines for flexibility...after sprinter's weight room strength training.
Let me give a really good example- when Eddie Robinson figured out that passing the ball and a very good weight program along with good speed drills set him apart, he adjusted his coaching tactics and used it. Consequently Grambling MURDERED teams in this conference, YOURS and others. Whites respected him before MEAC coaches did.
How many people from Cookman have produced cd's as jazz or classical musicians?
    Kirk Whalum- Ocean of Soul
    Kyle Turner- Sonic Boom
    Stephen Richard- Jukebox
Lloyd Hughes- GSU- and arguably one of the best tenured middle school bd's in southeast Texas with Ryan middle school
Brent Nabors- GSU/Texas Southern Univ- commands $600 or better at churches throughout the southwest
Don Washington- trumpet- Ocean of Soul, former first trpt and bugle DCI BLUE DEVILS
Andre Heyward- Ocean of Soul- was 2nd chair at the Kennedy center- trombone
Derrick Moss- percussion- Soul Rebels brass band- Jukebox
Stephanie Sanders- Sonic Boom- no offense but I seriously doubt there's a woodwind specialist who could touch her anywhere near Cookman
People's judgement is relative. When you get off that high horse, you understand that 1) our race has done and continues to do awesome things besides music and 2) people will say anything to claim a victory. If one of us in the SWAC picked up a kazoo and made it sing, some of YOUR MEAC counterparts would claim he was cooning...but be listnin to Aston Martin music on the way home from church....
    • Now you really think BCU didn't produce any great musicians that make music or plays in honorary symphonic bands around the world? I have reaepxt for all bands in every conference because we all are Marching Bands that holds the same craft. People just Ned to stop saying a show was better becuz a band played louder on one song. I grew up in middle school on FAMU but every since Norfolk blew them out at 05 Homecoming I switched to nothing but Southern, ASU and Norfolk!!!
But as I got older and seen more Bands with different styles of play it doesn't suit me anymore. I want to see knee lift, horn snap and etc.... Along with the blowing! We dis mor than TSU did in high school.. playing and Dancing!! Not to put TSU on blast becuz they show was powerful!!! However, you made some very valid points!

  • And on competition...from the show I've seen clips of from BCU at hbotb, you guys did an awesome job. So did everyone else...some not as awesome as others. You just have TIDBIT people looking for victories because 1)they weren't invited 2)they're rarely invited to anything and 3)they clique up on internet boards to find other people like them to claim those victories
