Promoting my First BOTB-Advice

A high school gave me permission to use their gym for my first gym botb. I will have 2 or 3 high school bands.

Just looking for advice on a format to follow from others who have done this.

How many rounds is the norm?

Are sectional fanfare cool or just percussion battles/dance line competition?

  • get me to film it that's always good

  • Get some more bands...

  • Can't have too many. A high school gym will only hold so many people.

  • Thanks. I'm waiting on one of the band directors to get back with me about how many people both sides of the bleachers can fit. At most there will be 3 bands. Most of the bands from I'm  from are marching like....40 to 60 band members.

My set up is have them march in one at a time, do a floor show: fanfare, up tempo tune, rap tune/dance/chant then go into the bleachers and then have the play rounds. After about 4 play rounds, have a competition between the percussion, dance, and flag lines. Then go back to play rounds and later on announce the winners.

I think I need to determine how many play rounds to have. I don't want them to feel like they will run out of songs. It will be from 3pm to 6pm.

  • I attended the Band Brawl between NSU, NCAT, and VSU. I think you should look to see how they had the set up. They had the band already seated and had the "tunnel" for the dancers, flag line, and drummajors only. Made it easier so all three bands didnt have to march out. But since it is 40-60 people it wont take that long or all the band members to march out. Also they only had sectionals for the drumline, dancers, flags, and tuba lines. The way the had it set up made it a really successful event.

  • The host school's band won't need transportation, obviously. Should the visiting bands be given tickets to sell to pay their transportation cost?

  • Dont make it competitive, give everybody a trophy.  Have an entertaining announcer.  You can go round robin form and make sure you have a round specifically for auxilaries and a round for drummers.  You can even set it up to where one band leaves and drama starts and vow to finish it like on wrestling lol.  Itll keep the crowd coming back

  • yes. Provides better incentive for them, and gives them an opportunity to promote it to their own crowd and bring their own fans
