I feel as though the morale of our band programs in HBCU's would be restored if the bands where judged during halftime & while in the stands. Could a judging system make such an impact that band match-ups would be exciting, regardless of the schools that are playing each other? Would the band world be changed if there was an ACTUAL winner/loser? Would programs be able to live up to a set standard of performing, rather than performing to the expectations of themselves?

What actual regulations could be implemented?

  • That has to be the DUMBEST idea ever. Try again

  • Bro, you can't judge bands.  Bcuz somewhere down the line, somebody's style will be considered "wrong".

  • That's what I was thinking.  You'll have that one judge who says that band a does something wrong because they don't think 'em.  But I would guess it can be done, since people judge singing competitions and dance offs all the time.  Of course the bias will be there (when is it not?), but I think we can look past it.

  • Not a good idea.  Let halftime performances be what they are (ie entertainment).  Place some kind of judging rubric to Marching Band halftime shows, and you will REALLY see bands be more and more like each other.  Forget originality!  Forget being authentic!  It's band enough that it seems like all of our bands play and sound the same WITHOUT the rules and judges.

Just give the crowd a good show and let them decide the winner.
