  • SU people aren't about to tell you why because it'll bring that originality claim into question. Read into the history of bands that SU's style was (thinking of a word)....... let's just say "evolved" from and you'll have your answer.

But SU's drum major does conduct the band, just listen to the whistle commands along with the mace. The commands like the halt, down beat, count two of cutoff etc... SU's DM uses them all. Now SU may use different terms but it's all part of the "evolved" style.

To SU's credit, the closest statement to the truth coming from the ranks was that it only takes one person to blow a whistle.

  • It isnt so much that SU is NOT willing to bring an originality claim to question. It's a KNOWN FACT, as well as both Doc Greggs AND Mr. Jackson always giving credence to the fact that the ORIGINAL style came from Ohio State's marching band, who had, and still has, only ONE drum major.

I think the reason people were unwilling to comment on the thread is because of the comment made by the OP that the drummajor doesnt direct the band. And whether he does or doesnt, what the hell does he think the directors are for?????? lol.

At SU, the composer of the music usually directs the band on that song. if Haymer arranged a song, then he directs. If Jackson arranged a song, then he directs. If a student writer in the band arranged a song, then he directs. Not very often does the drummajor arrange songs, cause SU plays ALOT of Level 4 and Level 5 arrangements, and that usually takes a little more age, wisdom, skill, and education to do, which is why the EXPERIENCED directors are writing and directing their songs.

None of this is LAW, but from my knowledge of the SU Band, this is what I have understood to be the case.
