Unlike a lot of people on here i talk more about the programs i personally have been around, but this one is for everyone! I notice that a lot of hbcu bandsmen want credit for having the ability to play and dance at the same time. Well i've watched some bands play in the stands and do a lil rock or something to a groove, and loose NO sound. versus Playing on the field and the second you rock or make any moves (march, dance, etc!) they loose sound.
My question....

What is the secret to playing on the field without loosing sound while dancing or marching? Some marching bands do drills that are crazy, but you can't hear anything. It makes since to loose sound when you turn the other direction, but when your marchng up and down field you shouldn't loose all your sound!

well that has to do with body control... some people just aren't in shape and also they just aren't use to marching while playing...
STANDS U ARE BASICALLY IN ONE PLACE BUT FIELD U MOVING ALL OVER SO I THINK ITS HAS ALOT TO DO WITH CONTROL OF YOUR BREATH TOO... BASICALLY U GOT TO MULTITASK AND PLAY AT THE SAME TIME MOST BANDS CAN DO IT BETTER THAN OTHERS. BUT IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE BAND AND HOW LONG THEY BEEN DOING IT
EXAMPLE- MASTER OF DISGUISE U TALKED TO ME ON HERE ALOT AND U KNO I GOT LOVE FOR ASU BUT YALL WERE LOUD ASS HELL N DA STANDS AT THE MCC BUT FIELD IT DIDNT MATCH THE SAME SOUND AT ALL.
1. Disciplined horn carriage in the brass sections
2. Actual "punch" exercises. That's NOT their real name but it's where you work on the entire band playing a phrase by moving: who sticks out, etc. and rehearse again and again
most of all its practice.your band will be good at whateva you practice on.if field presence and sound isn't a priority then its not gonna happen.and at the same time if your band concentrates more on stand music then thats what your strong point will be.we would march up and down the field with no music just learning to march.and when we finally got music if the sound wasnt there we did the show over and over again til the doc was satisfied.and that was everyday not once.
If you sound like shit on the field nine times of ten you sound like shit in stands. If you don't something is terribly wrong.
Need to get like Tenneessee State we doing everything to perfection or YOU CANT GO HOME .
this is definitely not a true statement cause there are a few bands that sound horrible on the field but produce some good sound in the stands.

Endurance and Stamina man... That was why we practice harder than the football team
i would say for one miles and bama state now everything bama state plays isnt garbage in the stands and jackson state also ow jackson doesn't sound bad on the field but their stand sound is miles ahead
Its all a science.. A drill isnt just a bunch of lines. To achive a particular sound, your various instruments have to be aligned a certain way. For example you cant put flutes on the front line and expect an in your face sting from the brass way in the back. Also theres a certain way to march. All that hopping JSU drum majors do is impossible to do while playing a musical instrument. Your body has to be able to sustain notes and phrase correctly while moving.
