  • se......oh wait nevermind. LoL

some good ones are long tones and different variations of long tones...also doing crunches/sit-ups on a mouth piece.

example. as you are coming up in your crunch/sit-up, blow air through your mouthpiece, or buzz through your mouthpiece.

  • At 60 bpm breathe in for 4, out for 4 four times, then go down to 3 and do that 3 times, etc til you're at 1. When you reach 1 you should breathe in and out until you feel uncomfortable doing the exercise. There are probably better ones out there, but I find this one to work just fine and it helps a lot.
  • That is a good exercise. We did the exact same thing in high school, instead, we started with 8. Breath in 8, hold 8, exhale 8 with what he said, 60 bpm. and continue down until you get to 1.

P.S. ALWAYS breath from your diaphragm, not your stomach :). To prevent that, and know that you're breathing right, look in the mirror while you're doing your exercise. Your stomach shouldn't be moving in and out.

This is for any horn player... not only brass.

  • Eating Grits helps ya breathe better too LOL
  • They're plent of books with yoga breathing exercises!  All of these help tremendously!
  • Dude. Imma tell you what my trumpet instructor told me (she's principal trumpet in the Mississippi symphony). You have been breathing your ENTIRE life, why would you change something that you've been doing correctly all your life. Playing an instrument is about how efficient you can be with the air you can take in.
  • Well tell her that's horrible advice!  Just because someone has been breathing their entire life doesn't mean that they're breathing correctly!  25% of people in western civilization breathe in throught their mouth(incorrect) and another 50% breathes from their chest instead of their lower abdomen.(incorrect)  Just because someone has been doing something all of their life, doesn't meaning they're do it "correctly".

"Breathing - most of us just do it without thinking about it, breathing in and out an average 28,000 times every day. But if you do breathe through your mouth regularly rather than through your nose, it may be detrimental to your health and well-being in several different ways.People who practice mouth breathing are also more likely to suffer from many other ailments including runny nose, asthma, dry cough, lower levels of energy and even crooked teeth."

  • I have always done this one.  Also in high school Mr. Hubbard used to make us breathe in and out while playin long tones and he would punch us in our stomachs while we were playing to strengthen our diaphrams.

  • are you serious???  so... have you met someone who never learned to breathe properly... or do you know people who CANT breathe properly due to ailments....   and where did you get this "breathing correctly" shit from???   there is a "best" way to do something... but if you are INHALING and EXHALING... and LIVING... then you are doing something correctly.....   IF I WALK WITH A LIMP, IT DOESNT MEAN I AM WALKING INCORRECTLY,  I AM JUST NOT DOING IT THE "BEST" OR MOST EFFICIENT WAY..... sir....
