  • Well just be able to read...time signatures like 4/4..6/8..cut time or marches...thats whats expected when you are in the band...as a crab u should have a humble attitude to learn..... from the upperclassmen.... da good and the bad....exercise is just used to get u in shape..and discipline..as far as what make crabs quit....they make themselves quit..like being lazy..not learning the music..or just having a bad attitude...thats something that..that individual can only fix...if want to be there you will whats required to be there...and i doubt that these days somebody is going to tell u to do something wrong..u know whats right and wrong..just have a little intensity also....and the best advice i can tell you..band-wise... as crab is to observe..and to be quiet..i mean like observe all the good members and learn from the mistakes of the bad ones....and the only people that should know what type of person you really are..is your crab brothers and sisters...good luck
  • Just have fun... It has to be something you enjoy and have fun doing cause the hours you send out there you could make a hella nice cash
  • The thing that makes them quit is the fact that bands that execute on a high level don't leave much leeway for those people that want things their way, or expect things to be handed to them.

They tend to be the people whose parents co-signed on EVERYTHING their child did, good or bad, and now they're in shock because nobody at the college level cared that they could play a high F really really loud...and told them about themselves.

On the exercising thing: it takes A LOT of strength and stamina to perform successfully in most HBCU bands. What you see on game day is the result of days, hours, and weeks of conditioning. Not many high school kids have the mentality to condition themselves like that, but they want to play what the college plays, and sound like the college. So now they're in college still trying the easy way out, and it's not working out. So they quit, or runtellmama.

It boils down to what your goal is, and what you're willing to do to achieve it.
  • oh thanks so much!!! oh yea....im tryna learn how to play in storm n sunshine right now. ive already played purple carnival, washington post, and incindental suite. im thinkin bout usin in storm n sunshine as my audition piece for gettin into college marchin band. yeaaaa i can read time signatures. my main focuses n goals for this year are to learn my full chromatic scale, learn the rest of my major scales, n do better counting. like counting ryhtms better. oh i have a great attitude....if someone tells me to run, then ill run. ill just do it. no need for backtalk. cuz thats wat girls try to do in my band. just do it n shutup! ya kno. n im not the one to tlk back. especially if i kno it can be used against me. n i can march too. n i kno how to listen n learn. n learn from my mistakes. i think i should be good because this is somethin i really want.
  • your audition piece should be a solo piece ask your BD for one... solos also help if your a music major... then you will be use to playing pieces for you juries (as called at schools I've atteted)

  • Weak mindedness and the lack of motivation to get any better or work harder than what they currently are.
  • Imma tell you straight up!! Whether you know your music or not..whether you are the best marcher or not...whether your the quiet one or not...CRABBING IS GOING TO BE A BITCH! BUT....just make the best out of it...get close with your crab brothers an sisters and do the damn thing..remember you damned if ya do..ya damed if ya dont..in the end you'll understand..and you will have a lot of stories to tell at the end of the season..it will be fun times to remember..just say fu%k it and NIKE!
  • You going see when you get there.
  • It is more mental than anything else.
  • It can be an excerpt from a concert piece, as long as it demonstrates the things that they are looking for. I used the low brass solo from Old Scottish Melody as my slow piece. It demonstrated the exact same things as a solo piece in our books did.
