Central State's homecoming was this past Saturday on October 9th and we battled Kentucky State's "Mighty Marching Ponies." I am senior who has watched many battles, but first time this weekend, I heard ESPN played in a 5th quarter by KSU. Thats one song that should not be played in a 5th but what is your opinion? Is there an unwritten rule among HBCU band members that some songs simply should not be brought to a battle?

  • ESPN should not be played anymore period......SMH everytime Doc calls this song for the WF to play...burn that damn song...Any song you played in yo field show is a definite no no in the 5th....
  • As far as I know, the only songs that shouldn't be played during a 5th quarter battle are songs that your band already played during THAT game (including halftime).
  • 8 bar loop rap tunes gets you an L in the 5th. It's a little different if the tune has more music and changes going on. (i.e. Power, And Then What, certain Drake tunes, etc.)
  • a 5th full of micheal jackson tunes in 2010 will get u a good ol L too
  • Its funny you said that cause thats exactly what K-State did. They played the same MJ mix they played last year and they played Power coming off the field, in the stands, and in the 5th quarter battle.

What songs if played in a 5th quarter earns your band an "L"?

  • Other than the fact that the Sports Center theme music has changed LOL I think it's a good spirit song, but definitely shouldn't be played once the game ends.

NO songs that were played at ANY time during the game should be played in a 5th.

I disagree about the MJ thing, but I do see your point. I personally think HBCU's should look to other genres of music for quality 5th tunes. There are plenty of them out there.
  • Some people actually think bands play everything for their personal preference. I've never understood it lol. I don't like certain songs but in order to have a book you need songs and all won't be favorites to the fans nor the bandmembers.
  • Honestly, with some of the crap that bands are bringing to the table these days...some of these bands can easily lose the battle if the other band ran the book of scales on them.

Says a lot about the music these days. It's not worth much, and it sounds bad...
  • any song can be played as long as it sound good
