  • FREAK A CHANT

    play ya horn

let ya horn do that talking

  • Good thread and good points made. Chanting keeps everyone in time, gets the crowd involved and is plain fun.

  • I don't think a chant or chanting is a prerequisite for collegiate marching bands.

  • I used to think that college bands didn't chant when I was in high school because I couldn't really hear them. Then once I actually sat in a collegiate band room I chanted for myself I realized that it depends on the program and the mentality of the band members. If you too cool to chant then you don't need to be in band.

  • This is soooo tru! #grindsmygears

But I think a number of people don't chant bcuz the chants don't seem creative enough and/or can make some people feel lame. Just being honest....

  • Chants are almost always lame. Just like dancing.

  • My opinion on this topic:

TRUE---Chanting is not a prerequisite for being in a marching band as well as having pride.

TRUE---let the horn do your talking when as a musician in any Marching band...(hint: blogs)

I will say this in time chanting has become a must and an opportunity to keep time, keep the crowd in the game, keep the flow of the song going, and show pride for your own band and your school. Since so many rules and regulations has been placed on marching bands primary SWAC bands this is sort of the only option. I will say this some bands have mastered out to cut off and come back in with little problems, however not all songs sound good doing it which is the reason for chanting as I stated.

I will also say that because of this new generation not having pride in ANYTHING but what others think of them is also a down fall. Sort of like the example of think how big every HBCU band could be if no one cared about what others think from a transition from HS to College. You can say chanting and dancing is lame, however, I think most forget that being in a MARCHING BAND means you must entertain and yes that might mean playing, dancing, or chanting. If you disagree with chanting, dancing I would suggest to bring it up to your band director. Plus yes, I was one of those ppl who hated chanting and dancing, However I had PRIDE in my University and my Band program.

  • chanfting in Cadence is much cooler. and "fun" its part of what bands do. but it depends on the song, and When why and where they do  Some Songs call for a chant, others dont.. Spirit songs and Neck.. YEAH.. every song no.. Cadences YES.. but they all don't work..

when i was little to chant Defence to get the crowd into it.. and now days thats just a band thing.. lol

I wish the Crowd new what TSU's band changed on "Screw" please note when I was there there wasn't a chant to it LOL!

it depends on the kind of chant.. for the most pat it's Military

  • I agree with you play ya horn all day. but why create an arrangement that involves chanting and don't.  Going from a fan to a member I use to wonder what the hell the band would be saying.  if your band have more than 200 members there is no reason why you can't hear the Chant. For instance Florida Classic 2010 FAMU Vs BCU Famu Seat 102/ BCU seat 124 during 5thQ  we Famu at 390-410 members BCU I think  290-350 members you could clearly hear BCU chants. not sure from their side of the stadium what we sounded like. but my point is if your going to do something do it don't have half ass it... And a lot of Programs In My Opinion been half ass it for a few season know.6652185263?profile=original

  • Lol at Cookman..basically if you don't wanna do thousands, you will hear the chants. But every band is different. Maybe it's not much of a deal in other programs.
